In this Episode, Garson Skelton, CSCS*D, RSCC, USAW1, CISSN, joins me to discuss his new passion project, Squats and Hops. Garson is both a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a Certified Beer Server. Squats and Hops is all about finding balance and consistency between training and nutrition, with enough flexibility so that you can enjoy a craft beer every now and again. Maybe you don't drink beer, but you like bbq, cupcakes, or ice cream. The Squats and Hops model of training and nutrition (within the framework of moderation) works for those things, too. Most online training and nutrition programs make no room for things like beer, cookies, and ice cream. Squats and Hops is different. You can hit a lifting PR, drop some inches and get back into those old jeans, or achieve nearly any other training or aesthetic goal, and celebrate with a beer. Garson can show you how!

In this episode, David Accardo joins me to discuss his new venture, Stix and Stone. What started out as a way for him to have some weight plates and a power rack in his back yard has turned into a business providing an extremely valuable source of lifting equipment and instruction for athletes all over the globe. Early on in this Covid-19 Pandemic, exercise equipment prices went through the roof and sporting good stores' shelves are empty. Now you can make your own plates, for pennies on the dollar, that are tough, customizable, and ready to use in the less time than it would take for plates to get shipped to your door!
Check out the website: https://www.stix-and-stone.com
David Accardo MS, CSCS, Owner of Stix and Stone and Maker of the DA Plate Mold, has been a Strength and Conditioning coach for over a decade, but when Covid-19 hit America, he found a new way to get his lifts in during quarantine and social distancing. Now he is shipping concrete molds across the globe to help others do the same thing.

In this episode, I talk with my friend, Beth Shaver, about her perseverance, persistence, and choosing to find solutions to problems despite an injury that has lead to 13 surgeries. If you've ever been injured, discouraged, or in a position that seems unfair, listen to this episode and follow Beth's example.
Beth Shaver is a longtime athlete and outdoor adventurer. After injuring her ankle in a soccer match in 2011, she endured 4 surgeries, and subsequent complications from Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type 2 (CRPS II). With help from the ExoSym device, she returned to her active lifestyle in 2013, only to injure her leg again in 2016 falling from a rope. Since 2018, she's undergone an additional 9 surgeries and is currently still working towards her recovery.
Beth is a firm believer that in life we have two choices: we can give up or we can go on. Her hope is that no matter what challenges you face, you will always choose to go on.

In this episode, I throw my "2 cents" in with regard to the currently very controversial idea of supplementing with BCAA's. Like many things currently on debate, there seems to be little nuance or room for the "gray area." I do my best to explain that in an ideal world where athletes consume A: enough Calories, and B: enough protein, the need for BCAA's would be relatively low, if necessary at all. However, in the real world, with real youth and endurance athletes like those I work with, consuming enough Calories and enough protein is very often a mountain too high to climb. This is where seeking something that "works" is better than missing the mark altogether. In other words, when you can't be perfect, don't let "good" be the enemy of "perfect." Just because YOU may not need to supplement with BCAA's, does not mean there is no value of benefit for someone else. What do you think?

In this episode, Dr. Jill Parnell joins me to discuss her recently published research on restricting specific foods in order to mitigate GI distress and symptoms associated with endurance running. If you've ever experienced GI symptoms while running or racing (up to 90% of runners have experienced this sort of thing!), then this is a great episode to move you towards fixing some of these issues.
Dr. Parnell is an Associate Professor at Mount Royal University in the Department of Health and Physical Education. She obtained her PhD in medical sciences at the University of Calgary researching novel nutritional therapies for obesity and associated co-morbidities. Presently, she maintains an active research portfolio in the field of performance nutrition, and works with youth athletes, Paralympic athletes, and endurance runners. Her research focuses on diet quality, ergogenic aids, and exercise induced gastrointestinal symptoms.
